Postpartum Care: Vaginal Trauma

Bruised Vaginal Mucosa.
Contusion of the vaginal mucosa during parturition. Exposed tissues subsequently became contaminated and infected.
Plahotnik A (2007)

Traumatized Vaginal Mucosa.
Swollen vestibular and vaginal mucosa become further traumatized and infected by rubbing of the tail on the exposed tissues.
Plahotnik A (2007)

Necrotic Vaginitis.
Necrotic vaginitis may follow an excessively forceful delivery. Severe bruising, with or without lacerations, leads to lack of blood supply and subsequent necrosis.
Roberts SJ (1973)

Trauma of the Birthcanal.
Severe bruising, with or without lacerations, leads to lack of blood supply and subsequent necrosis. Necrotic vaginitis may follow an excessively forceful delivery.
Chenoweth PJ (2012)

Trauma of the Birthcanal.
Bruising is most evident at the vulvovaginal junction [hymen area] and area of constriction. Mucus and clotted blood have accumulated in the fornix area.
Chenoweth PJ (2012)

Laceration of the Vulva.
Laceration of the vulva can occur during extraction of the fetus, particularly in first calf heifers. Hydrotherapy with cold water is recommended.
Utrecht (1976)

Perineal Swelling Due to Vaginal Abscessation.
Vaginal laceration followed by necrosis and abscessation. Perineal swelling extended to the right ischiorectal fossa.
Utrecht (1976)

Necrotic Vaginitis and Abscessation.
Vaginal laceration followed by necrosis and abscessation. The abscess is pointing and trying to rupture through the skin, the way of the least resistance.
Utrecht (1976)

Necrotic Vaginitis and Abscessation.
Vaginal laceration followed by necrosis and abscessation. The abscess is pointing and trying to rupture through the skin, the way of the least resistance. The skin has become very thin and avascular at the apex.
Utrecht (1976)

Necrotic Vaginitis and Abscessation.
Vaginal laceration followed by necrosis and abscessation. An exploratory stab incision has been made.
Utrecht (1976)

Necrotic Vaginitis and Abscessation.
Vaginal laceration followed by necrosis and abscessation. The abscess has been surgically drained by a liberal vertical incision extending to the lowest level of the cavity of the abscess, under epidural anesthesia. Lavage and packing to follow.
Utrecht (1976)

Persistent Median Band.
The small, 15 mm wide vertical median band was snapped by the fetus during parturition. Cow died from unrelated causes 18 days post partum.
Drost M (1979)

Persistent Median Band - Close-up.
The small, 15 mm wide vertical median band was snapped by the fetus during parturition. Cow died from unrelated causes 2.5 weeks post partum.
