Accidents of Gestation: Maceration

Fetal Maceration.
Fetal maceration of an approximately 5 month old fetus. Presence of a corpus hemorrhagicum on the right ovary indicates that the cow had been in heat about 3 days earlier (slaughter house specimen). Most of the fetal parts appear to have been expelled.
Drost M (1980)

Complete Maceration of 4-5 Month Old Fetus.
Slaughterhouse specimen. Complete maceration of a 4 to 5 month old fetus. Black discoloration is usually accompanied by a strong hydrogen sulfite odor.
Drost M (1980)

Complete Maceration of 6-7 Month Old Fetus.
Slaughterhouse specimen. Complete maceration of a 6 to 7 month old fetus. Flies are evidence of foul odor.
Drost M (1980)

Complete Maceration of 6-7 Month Old Fetus.
Slaughterhouse specimen. Complete maceration of a 6 to 7 month old fetus. Flies are evidence of foul odor.
Drost M (1980)

Complete Maceration of 6-7 Month Old Fetus.
Slaughterhouse specimen. Complete maceration of a 6 to 7 month old fetus. Flies are evidence of foul odor. Note the thick wall of the uterus.
Drost M (1980)

Complete Maceration of 8+ Month Old Fetus.
Slaughterhouse specimen; Maceration of an 8 month old fetus. A femur is partially passed through the cervix. Some of the smaller bones have already been expelled. Contents of the uterus are dry and sticky. Note corpus hemorrhagicum on the ovary; the cow had been in heat about 3 days before, perhaps allowing the cervix to soften and relax. Incomplete abortion.
Drost M (1980)

Macerated Twin.
The macerated twin was delivered at term along with a live calf. The bones appear to be the size of those of an eight month old fetus.
Villarroel A (2013)

Residual Bones after Incomplete Abortion in a Bison.
Residual bones after fetal maceration and incomplete abortion. Bones had to be removed surgically from this bison.
Drost M (1980)

Maceration in Progress.
The process of maceration of this fetus is not yet complete as the moist fetus is still intact. The infection had metastasized from a lung abscess.
Roberts SJ (1973)

Macerated Bones in the Uterus.
Residual macerated bones after an incomplete abortion could be palpated in this uterus.
Roberts SJ (1973)

Uterus Opened to Show Macerated Bones.
Residual macerated bones after the incomplete abortion of an approximately 7 month old fetus.
Roberts SJ (1973)

Fetal Maceration in Progress.
Maceration of a 4 month old fetus in progress. Not all soft tissue has been absorbed yet. Incomplete abortion. Duplication of the external os of the cervix is an incidental finding in this specimen.
