Male Reproductive System: Prepuce

Prolapsed Prepuce.
Bos indicus bulls have a large pendulous prepuce. It is common and normal for a Bos indicus bull to slightly relax the penis and allow the preputial lining to protrude. This predisposes the lining to trauma.
Larsen RE (2001)

Pendulous Prepuce.
Bulls of Bos indicus breeding, or Zebu bulls, normally have a pendulous prepuce which is prone to injury.
Larsen RE (2001)

Chronic Prolapsed Prepuce.
Chronic prolapse of the prepucial lining with environmental contamination.

Injured Preputial Lining.
Presented as a prolapsed prepuce. Lesion shown after a period of conservative treatment of slinging and hydrotherapy.
Larsen RE (1982)

Old Healing Preputial Injury.
Conservative treatment such as slinging of the prepuce and hydrotherapy can dramatically reduce the swelling and speed the healing process.
Larsen RE (1982)

Preputial Lesion.
Bull presented with prolapsed prepuce. After a week of conservative therapy, the edema was reduced, and the lesion was reduced in size, allowing the prepuce to be replaced within the sheath.
Larsen RE (2001)

Preputial Sling.
A simple sling made out of an old bed sheet or piece of burlap can be used to suspend the prolapsed prepuce. It helps reduce edema and it keeps the tissues relatively clean and protected from further injury. The bull can urinate through the cloth.
Larsen RE (2001)

Preputial Sling.
A simple sling made out of an old bed sheet or piece of burlap is used to suspend the prolapsed prepuce. It helps reduce edema and it keeps the tissues relatively clean and protected from further injury. The bull can urinate through the cloth. It is not always easy to keep the sling in place.
Larsen RE (2001)

Stepped-on Prolapse of the Prepuce.
A Brangus bull traumatically amputated a prolapsed prepuce by stepping on it. Due to loss of most of the inner lamina, this bull could not be returned to service.
Larsen RE (2001)

Stepped-on Prolapse of the Prepuce.
End-on view of the preputial orifice of a Brangus bull that traumatically amputated his prolapsed prepuce by stepping on it. Due to loss of most of the inner lamina, this bull could not be returned to service.

Preputial Laceration - Hydrotherapy.
Hydrotherapy of a lacerated and swollen prepuce of an Angus bull to reduce swelling. The circumferential loop of the hose has been perforated at ~ 3 cm intervals.

Healing Laceration.
Old healing preputial laceration. Keeping the lesion clean and protected inside the sheath promotes healing.

Severe Preputial Injury.
This Guzara bull repeatedly stepped on his extremely pendulous prepuce causing severe trauma.
Vale WG (1987)

Severe Preputial Injury.
Despite severe injury and swelling of the prepuce this bull was able to urinate freely.
Vale WG (1987)

Traumatized Preputial Prolapse.
The dewclaws of this Santa Gertrudis bull were wrapped to prevent further injury to the pendulous prepuce. Chronic prolapse may lead to stenosis hence difficult urination. This bull is a candidate for a preputial sling. A circumcision may be indicated at a later date.
