Obstetrics: Pelvic Dimensions

Maternal Pelvis.
The diameter of the bovine pelvis is oval whereby the vertical diameter is greater than the horizontal diameter. In addition, the dorsal horizontal diameter is somewhat greater than the ventral one.
Fields MJ (1999)

Angles of the Pelvis.
When the recumbent cow in labor strains, the abdominal muscles pull the pubis and the hind legs forward. This motion slightly increases the functional diameter of the pelvic canal.

Pelvimetry - Vertical Diameter.
Hydraulic Kraut pelvimeter in place for measurement of the vertical diameter. For purposes of illustration, a couple of wooden dowels have been used to allow for soft tissue mass.

Pelvimetry - Horizontal Diameter.

Rice Pelvimeter.
The Rice pelvimeter is a simple, mechanical, scissor-like instrument to measure the internal dimensions of the bovine pelvis in the live animal.

Rice Pelvimeter - Vertical Diameter.
After inserting the knobbed ends of the pelvimeter vertically into the vagina, the handles of the instrument are spread open until (firm) resistance is met. The vertical diameter can then be read on the scale.
Drost M (1975)

Rice Pelvimeter - Horizontal Diameter.
After inserting the knobbed ends of the pelvimeter horizontally into the vagina, the handles of the instrument are spread open until (firm) resistance is met. The horizontal diameter can then be read on the scale.
