Accidents of Gestation: Uterine Torsion

Torsion of the Uterus.
The uterus had rotated 360 degrees anterior to the cervix, obstructing the birth canal for the single lamb. Thrombosis of the uterine arteries occurred.
Smith MC (2006)

Autolysed Fetus.
The fetus is partially autolysed and there is hemolytic staining of the fetal membranes. The fetus is in posterior presentation. Delivery was impaired by the torsion of the uterus.
Smith MC (2006)

Thrombosis of Uterine Vessels.
The left uterine blood supply was partially occluded due to torsion of the uterus [size of the tile is 15 cm square].
Smith MC (2006)

Vagina / Torsion.
There was no vaginal involvement in this case of uterine torsion since the torsion occurred at the level of the body of the uterus. Circulation of the vagina was not impaired. Some hemoglobin stained cervical mucus protruded from the external os of the cervix.
Smith MC (2006)

Torqued Uterus.
Tightly distended and discolored uterine wall. Contents cannot be palpated.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Incision of the Uterus.
Uterus is incised. The uterine wall is edematous and congested due to impaired circulation.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Hemorrhagic Uterine Fluids.
Discharge of bloody coagulated fetal fluids upon incision of the uterus.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Separating the Fetal Membranes.
The fetal membranes are detached from the uterus by pulling the cotyledons out of the caruncular cups.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Coagulated Blood Vessels.
There are multiple dark distended blood vessels. The dark dots represent transected blood vessels. The uterine wall is thickened.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Inside View of the Uterus.
There are multiple dark distended blood vessels. The uterine wall is thickened and there is major obstruction of blood flow.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Tip of the Uterine Horn.
The tip of the horn near the ovary is filled with clotted blood.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Twisted Body of the Uterus.
The body of the uterus is tightly twisted anterior to the cervix and is blocking the blood supply to the uterus.
Mogheiseh A (2013)

Broad Ligament Twisted.
The uterine arteries in the broad ligament are twisted shut.
Mogheiseh A (2013)
