Placenta: Abnormal Placenta

Infected Caruncles.
Endometrial surface of a recently gravid uterus with both everted caruncles and normal concave caruncles. Some caruncles contain necrotic remnants of cotyledons. Some of the cotyledons are infected.

The severe intercotyledonary thickening and exudate were caused by Q fever rickettsia (Coxiella burnetii). Q fever is a zoonotic disease.
