Chorioallantoic Pouches.
Chorioallantoic pouches are small pedunculated invaginations into the allantois arranged in a circle around the attachment of the umbilical cord. At the bottom of the picture is a hippomane also described as an allantoic calculus. The latter are generally free-floating in the allantoic fluid.

Expulsion of the Fetal Membranes.
Stage 3 of parturition: delivery of the fetal membranes. They are normally delivered within 3 to 6 hours. Mares should be treated within 12 to 24 hours to avoid septicemia, toxemia, and possible postparturient laminitis.

Retained Fetal Membranes.
Stage 3 of parturition: delivery of the fetal membranes. They are normally delivered within 3 to 6 hours. A knot is tied in the portion of the membranes that is hanging our the vulva to prevent the mare from stepping on the membranes or catching them on something.
