Placenta: Normal Placenta

Fetal Membranes.
Normal chorioallantoic membranes expelled within 2 hours after delivery of twins. Goats have an epitheliochorial cotyledonary placenta.
Grimmett JB (1982)

Term Placenta.
Normal spontaneously expelled fetal membranes. Fresh in appearance. No objectionable odor.
Smith MC (2006)

Cotyledons.
Cotyledons are the fetal components of the placentomes of the placenta, which interdigitate with the maternal caruncles. There are four rows of 10 to 12 caruncles per uterine horn.
Grimmett JB (1982)

Nulliparous Versus Pluriparous Caruncles.
The uterus on the left is from a nulliparous doe. The uterus on the right is from a puriparous doe in which the caruncles are more typically cupshaped.

Twin Placenta.
Two umbilical cords derive from this epichorial placenta. The circulation of each of the twins generally does not intermingle which explains the rare occurrence of freemartinism in goats.
