Cotyledons are the fetal components of the placentomes of the placenta, which interdigitate with the maternal caruncles. There are four rows of 10 to 12 caruncles per uterine horn.
The uterus on the left is from a nulliparous doe. The uterus on the right is from a puriparous doe in which the caruncles are more typically cupshaped.
Two umbilical cords derive from this epichorial placenta. The circulation of each of the twins generally does not intermingle which explains the rare occurrence of freemartinism in goats.
