Goat-Sheep Hybrids.
Hybridization between sheep and goats has been reported, but the two species do not readily interbreed. Ewes inseminated with goat spermatozoa generally fail to conceive, although a few eggs may be fertilized. Cleavage does not generally occur. Matings between the ram and the doe frequently result in conception, but the hybrid embryos usually fail to survive beyond the second month of gestation, probably due to hemolytic disease. In ram x doe fetuses the diploid number of chromosomes is 57 compared with 54 in the sheep and 60 in the goat.
