Obstetrics: Evaluating the Fetus
Dystocia.
A direct vaginal examination is in order at once. There is obvious meconium staining (yellow color), indicating fetal distress. How long has the doe been in labor, is there more than one leg?

Swollen Head.
Both front legs are retained at the shoulders. The head is swollen by venous congestion due to compression of both jugular veins.

Only the head is showing. If the kid is dead, the head should be amputated to make more room for an examination, to repel the fetus and try to retrieve one or both legs.

Enlarged fetal head and limbs due to the presence of air in the interstices of the connective tissue.

Elevating the Hindquarters.
After head of the dead fetus has been amputated, the hindquarters are elevated, with the doe in dorsal recumbency, to facilitate examining the remainder of the fetus by relieving pressure and creating more room to maneuver.
