Mammary hyperplasia
Mammary hyperplasia in a one-year old queen. Mammary hyperplasia is caused by elevated progesterone The caudal mammary glands contained areas of necrosis which required additional treatments and pain management.

A queen with gangrenous mastitis.
A cat with gangrenous mastitis in the caudal right mammary gland. The surrounding tissues are also affected and are devitalized. The kittens were removed from this queen and cross fostered to another female. The queen was systemically ill and was no longer producing milk in any of the glands. This queen was treated with intravenous fluids, intravenous antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories. The gland was treated directly with warm compresses and bandaging.

The tissue has sloughed leaving an open wound. The degree of necrotic tissue required surgical debridement and bandaging to keep this area clean.

Treatment of a queen with gangrenous mastitis.
After several consecutive surgical debridement episodes with bandaging. The necrotic tissue has been removed and a bed of granulation tissue is now apparent. This wound was allowed to heal by second intention. If the wound does not heal completely, primary wound closure can be performed to provide complete healing.
